Porcelain earns a place in this comparison because marble's weakness is specific and porcelain's answer to it is total. Marble etches on contact with acid; a fired porcelain body is chemically inert, so lemon, wine and cleaners do nothing to it at all. Porcelain also comes in panels far larger and thinner than a marble slab, which matters for a shower wall or a full-height splash where marble would need seams and serious support. What it cannot reproduce is translucency. Light travels a short way into marble and comes back, which is most of why the material has been used for three thousand years; a porcelain panel is opaque and its pattern sits at or near the surface. Where water and cleaning products are constant, porcelain is the sensible specification. Where the stone is the subject of the room, it is a substitute and reads as one.
