Granite vs quartzite

These get confused because both are hard natural stone, and the short answer is that quartzite is usually the harder of the two and looks nothing like it. Quartzite begins as sandstone and is metamorphosed until the quartz grains fuse, putting it around 7 on the Mohs scale — harder than a steel blade, hard enough that cutting it costs real time and tooling. Granite sits a little lower and is the more forgiving stone to fabricate. Visually they diverge sharply: granite reads as granular and speckled because it is an assembly of visible crystals, while quartzite tends toward flowing veins on a light ground and is routinely mistaken for marble. If you want the look of marble with the toughness of granite, quartzite is the reason that sentence exists. If you want the classic speckled counter, no quartzite will give it to you.
