Marble vs quartz

Most people arriving here want marble and are trying to talk themselves into or out of it. The useful facts: marble etches, permanently and fast, because it is carbonate and acid dissolves it; quartz does not etch, does not stain, and never needs sealing. Quartz is also made in marble-look patterns specifically to answer this question, and the good ones are convincing at a distance. Where they part company is close up and over time. A marble vein runs through the block and does something different on every slab; a designed vein repeats, and in a large open plan the eye eventually finds the repeat. Marble also changes — it dulls, it takes a patina, it records the life of the kitchen — and that is either the appeal or the deal-breaker. If a kitchen has to look new indefinitely, marble is the wrong material, and no amount of sealing changes it.
