Granite vs marble

This is a choice between durability and a particular kind of beauty, and on the practical side it is not close. Granite is an igneous rock of interlocked quartz and feldspar; marble is recrystallized limestone, which means it is calcium carbonate, which means acid dissolves it. A squeezed lemon, a splash of red wine or the wrong bathroom cleaner will etch a dull mark into polished marble in seconds, and no sealer prevents it — etching is a reaction with the stone itself, not a stain sitting in it. Granite shrugs all of that off. People still choose marble, and knowingly: the veining and the way it takes light are things granite does not do, and a marble counter that has been used for a decade has a patina its owners tend to defend. Choose marble because you want marble and accept what it becomes. Choose granite if the surface has to look the same in ten years as it does the day it goes in.
