Slate arrives in forms sharing a name and little else: full slabs for counters and vanities, and gauged product — tile, ledger panel, paver — sold by the piece. Establish which the job needs at the outset: the range runs deepest in paving and cladding, and countertop work draws on a narrower part. Color skews dark, with blacks and multicolor leading and warm golds a minority, so a warm scheme is a smaller pool than the family suggests, and worth holding from a single lot.

Decide the finish early. A cleft face is not flat and its thickness moves across the sheet, which drives edge build-up, seam placement and undermount detail, so a fabricator wants it resolved before templating.
