It is specified where a designer wants the visual quietness of concrete and cannot accept what a real concrete slab does: cure unpredictably, crack, stain and require ongoing sealing.

Why it is specified over poured concrete
- Dimensionally stable and installed dry — no cure schedule on the programme
- No cracking, no efflorescence, no sealing regime
- Consistent from panel to panel, where a real pour never is
- Slip ratings are certified rather than hoped for
What to watch
- Grout joints are what betray the effect. Minimal joints and a matched grout colour are the whole illusion.
- Movement is low by design. If a client is expecting visual interest from the floor, this is not the material.
- Very large panels need a flat substrate — tolerance failures show immediately at this size.
Formats and thickness
Large-format panel and tile, 6mm to 20mm. 20mm is used for exterior paving and pedestal-set terraces.
