View limestone in the catalog →Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from compacted marine sediment. It is soft, porous and consistently coloured, often with visible fossil detail rather than veining.
Where marble and quartzite are chosen for what they do visually, limestone is chosen for what it does not do. It is a background material, and in a project with strong joinery or art it is frequently the right one.
Where it performs
- Interior and exterior flooring in low-abrasion areas
- Façade and exterior wall cladding
- Pool surrounds and terraces, where its low heat retention underfoot is a genuine advantage in Nevada
- Fireplace surrounds and wall panelling
What to watch
- Porous. It needs a sealer, and in wet or food areas it needs maintaining.
- Soft — it will patina and take a rounded edge over time. On a hotel terrace this reads as age; in a lobby it may read as damage.
- Colour is consistent but tonal variation between lots is real. Order the full quantity at once.
Finishes
Honed is standard. Brushed and textured finishes add slip resistance for exterior and pool work. Limestone is rarely polished — the surface does not hold a mirror polish and the result looks wrong.
